How to apply

We are happy to hear from anyone interested in joining our group, be it undergraduates, summer students, graduate students or postdoctoral fellows. Please get in touch by sending your CV and a one page statement of interest as a single PDF file to Marko and he’ll get back to you.

MPhil and PhD studentships

Always open to PhD applications from motivated candidates with the right skills and education,  who are interested in our research and who want to make a career in science. Send your CV and a statement of interest why you are interested in doing a PhD in our group and why we would want you to Marko, as a single PDF file. And do think about funding already before applying (see below).

Like in all areas of science, obtaining funding is a significant hurdle. There is fair bit of it , but it is very competitive. And we only accept students who obtain their scholarship through competitive schemes. We do not accept self-funded students for PhD.

For MPhil (one year research-only degree) we can consider self-funding, but in addition to fees and living costs, we need to find at least  £5,000 for laboratory expenses and it is not possible for students to pay for these. There is very limited funding for MPhil training from funding agencies as well.

There are a number of schemes for PhD students to apply to. Many are available for UK  candidates (incl some who have lived here longer, see postgraduate pages for further detaukls) and some require for UK candidates to have lived or studied in UK for several years before the are eligible for full fees and maintanance scholarship.

BBSRC Doctoral Training Programme (DTP) funded some 30-40 studentship across all of Cambridge (some 300 groups) in biological sciences, but Cambridge lost this in 2019. Some individual studentships are available int he Departments and in the School of Biological Sciences. These are normally advertised separately.

MRC DTP is similarly providing funding for UK and EU students in biomedical sciences, including relevant basic science. More details of this program can be found at https://mrcdtp.medschl.cam.ac.uk/

Various other funding opportunities exist either within University of Cambridge for postgraduate students, more details from the Departmental Graduate Student pages.

There might be scholarships available in your home country for PhD studies abroad, do investigate these options. And consult the graduate office pages for costs involved.

Postdoctoral fellows

Any funding we have for postdoctoral fellows will be advertised on the University jobs portal , but if you are keen to apply for your own funding as well, please check schemes from EU MSCA , EMBO and HFSPO for postdoctoral fellows.

We are happy to hear from capable scientists with clear interest in our research from all areas of science, not just structural biology. We can provide expertise in that – what can you bring to us?

Naturally, get in touch with Marko first with your CV etc.

Summer studentship training

We do host one or two undergraduate students for vacation research training most years, depending on how much space we have and whether we have someone with time to do training and supervision. If you are enthusiastic about science and want to get your hands dirty in the lab, please do email and we can discuss this. CV, statement of interest, etc.
